Fitbit for You?
I have used pedometers before, although I used them intermittingly but I was also way more active before due to chasing young children. Fast forward to recent times where the children no longer need me to chase them around, it seems like the more I found myself sitting instead of moving. That sitting caught up with me and soon the pant size went up by one. I wasn’t too upset because it was only one size but taking the stairs was starting to wind me. Something had to change!
I did not want to go to a gym, not my style and walking with the dog was looking like a way better option. I know how far it is around the block and did I walk it each day 5 times? Uh no! Not even close. I also learned that sitting too long slows down metabolism of sugar so why did it take me so long to get something like the Fitbit? I do not know. Maybe it was because I didn’t know that having something like this coax you out of the desk chair and ask you if you want to take a stroll of 250 steps? Maybe it was because I didn’t know a device could give you an idea of how many hours you are sleeping or potential calories that have been burned but I do now. I think what really made me want one was heart rate monitoring as I was trying to get to my target heart rate. Finding my pulse in my neck and doing the math while trying to listen to a book on audible was just not working so, Viola! Choices of monitors became something I worked on for about three weeks.
I like simple things and although I do like Apple products I did not see that Apple watch in the budget nor did I see myself learning how to use it, thus I would probably feel bad for spending the money and pretending to be someone I am not. So the other choice was Fitbit and man once you start looking you often find everyone has something like this and now you feel left behind….oh well, better late than never.
I will tell you for me the Charge 2 is the choice because I wanted the heart rate monitor but there are other choices, like the Alta which is smaller and sleeker and now with heart rate monitoring or maybe the Blaze which looks like the Apple watch and will monitor your heart and stream your music but it is much larger. I am not certain that I feel any of these are very accurate because my daughter got the Apple watch for her birthday and a Christmas gift so walking side by side we should have close to the same number and they are but not exact even when we try to do the arm swings the same but that is ok it gives me the reminder I need so I don’t have my button on my pants telling me when it gets too late. I would rather know something in the ballpark than be in the dark and turn on the lights and seeing the surprise, they don’t fit anymore, and that’s just not cool. For about $150.00 I picked this up and for less than a good cup of coffee a day I have a reminder with me most of the time. It seems I am catching on to something new this thing can do for me or remind me to do more and more and that is pretty neat. I may very well figure this out but I really just need the awareness piece which I am very satisfied knowing it will remind me to get off my a$$ and take a stroll. One last cool feature I have so far found it the friend connection-it is rather like a challenge and an accountability tool if you connect with your friends.
The only drawback of this Fitbit is I wear it on my left arm and also use the mouse with that hand so it sometimes feels awkward and uncomfortable., I just take it off since I am sitting—that means I have to remember to put is back on. Sleeping with it is also sometime not my idea of comfort but it is not bad. It is cool to get an idea of how the sleeping is going. I think we overestimate how much sleep we actually get and we could all use more.
Check it out for yourself and talk to others. When my daughter comes home for winter break I will get her input and see how I feel about the Apple watch and let you know. (Update: The daughter loves her Apple watch and that is great because she got it by using the money she received at Christmas time so if you have that kind of money to spend and you are an Apple lover who wants all things syncing then go for it. I am very satisfied with my Fitbit and it’s ability to keep me on track.
Until then keep moving as you transcend the daily muck.
Peace, Health and Happiness,
Connie
